The southeast servers of USA will be moving from Miami FL to Charleston SC for now to not just offset costs, but to also open up to more players earlier on that may be very distant from Florida. This is not what I had hoped for, as I am located in Florida and prefer the best possible connection (even worse, I'm on WiFi!), but this will be beneficial to others more than it will for me.
This will require an IP change. If you are particularly a regular of the Double Action: Boogaloo server hosted here, this concern mainly goes out to you as you may have the server added to your favorites. It will need to be added again from the Internet server list.
Currently, the cost to run these servers is $3.80 per day. This totals to about $110 per month.
I brought out my calculator for this one:
There are approximately 780 unique and returning players that connect to any server every day of the week. If just half of those players each donate five dollars to the upkeep of the servers in one month or one day, the servers can stay online for another 17 months straight. I don't want this to sound like a wikipedia pledge, but it doesn't make it any less true. This is more than just a hobby for me, and it has always proved to be costly in the long run as running the servers alone generates zero return other than the satisfaction of doing a good deed.
Even if the servers went down next week, I will still return at some point to try again. This bothers me though, as burning bridges are not something I enjoy leaving behind in the wake of the community.
Servers in South America/Brazil will remain untouched at this time, but that is the most costly server as it is a 12 core with 64GB of RAM. It is running 47 game servers, and the load average with 31 servers being fully populated shows that no more servers can be added to this machine, past the event when they are all populated at once (Friday-Sunday). Brazil location costs $2.631 per day. Brazil location currently has about 13 more days of life in it before I start pulling hairs, but I vow to do the best that I can.
